Anthropic Claude Opus 4.6 model release details and features

On Thursday, Anthropic released the latest version of Opus — its most advanced model and a particularly important model for Claude Code. Opus 4.5 was only released last November, and with 4.6, the company has sought to broaden its model's capabilities and appeal, allowing for a greater variety of uses and customers.
Perhaps the most notable addition to the newest version of Opus is the inclusion of what the company calls "agent teams" — teams of agents that can split larger tasks into segmented jobs. "Instead of one agent working through tasks sequentially, you can split the work across multiple agents — each owning its piece and coordinating directly with the others," the company says. Scott White, Head of Product at Anthropic, compared the new feature to having a talented team of humans working for you, noting that the segmenting of agent responsibilities allows them "to coordinate in parallel [and work] faster." The agent teams are currently available in a research preview for API users and subscribers.
Opus 4.6 also comes with a longer context window — meaning that the program has a capacity to recall a greater amount of information per user session. The new model offers 1 million tokens of context, which is comparable to what the company's Sonnet (versions 4 and 4.5) currently offers. Those context windows allow for work involving larger code bases and can also allow for the processing of larger documents, the company says.
The new version of Opus also integrates Claude directly into PowerPoint as an accessible side panel. This is a step up from PowerPoint's previous integration with the chatbot. Previously, a user could tell Claude to create a PowerPoint deck, but the file would then have to be transferred to PowerPoint to edit the presentation, White said. Now the presentation can be crafted within PowerPoint, with direct help from Claude.
White told TechCrunch that Opus has evolved from a model that was highly capable in one particular domain — software development — into a program that could be "really useful for a broader set" of knowledge workers. "We noticed a lot of people who are not professional software developers using Claude Code simply because it was a really amazing engine to do tasks," he said. White added that the kinds of people the company has seen using it include not just software engineers, but product managers, financial analysts, and people from a variety of other industries.

EU regulatory action against Meta over WhatsApp and AI competition
BRUSSELS, Feb 9 (Reuters) - EU competition regulators have threatened to stop Meta Platforms from blocking artificial intelligence rivals from its WhatsApp messaging service while it investigates suspected abuse of a dominant position by the U.S. tech giant.
The European Commission said on Monday that it has sent a statement of objections, or charges, to Meta over violation of the bloc's rules and intends to impose interim measures to prevent serious and irreparable harm to rivals, mirroring moves by Italy's competition watchdog in December.
"We must protect effective competition in this vibrant field, which means we cannot allow dominant tech companies to illegally leverage their dominance to give themselves an unfair advantage," EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said in a statement.
"That is why we are considering quickly imposing interim measures on Meta, to preserve access for competitors to WhatsApp while the investigation is ongoing and avoid Meta's new policy irreparably harming competition in Europe."
Meta said there was no reason for the EU to intervene.
"There are many AI options and people can use them from app stores, operating systems, devices, websites and industry partnerships," a Meta spokesperson said in an email.
"The Commission's logic incorrectly assumes the WhatsApp Business API (software) is a key distribution channel for these chatbots."
Meta implemented its policy on January 15, allowing only its Meta AI assistant on WhatsApp.
The Commission's decision on whether to impose interim measures will depend on Meta's reply and rights of defence, the watchdog said.
The EU investigation underscores the bloc's determination to enforce its antitrust rules despite U.S. criticism of European action against big U.S. technology companies.
A Brazilian court last month suspended an interim measure by the country's antitrust agency against Meta on the same issue.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Global semiconductor sales are expected to hit $1 trillion this year, the Semiconductor Industry Association said on Friday.
The group, which represents most U.S. chip firms, said that chip sales hit $791.7 billion in 2025, an increase of 25.6% over the previous year. That booming growth is expected to continue into this year as major technology firms around the world spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build out data centers for artificial intelligence.
The growth leader and largest segment of chips was the kind of advanced computing chips made by Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Intel. Sales of those products increased by 39.9%, totaling $301.9 billion in 2025.
The second-largest category was memory chips, whose prices are soaring amid an AI-induced shortage. Memory chip sales rose 34.8% to $223.1 billion.
But the AI boom has extended to nearly every part of the chip industry, with John Neuffer, the president and chief executive of the Washington, D.C.-based industry group, saying that executives at a range of smaller firms expressed optimism for 2026 when he recently visited Silicon Valley.
"The refrain I heard was, 'No one knows what's going to happen with the AI build out a year from now, but my orders are completely full,'" Neuffer told Reuters. "At least for the next year, we're on a pretty, pretty strong glide path." [预测]

Earlier this week, the release of industry-specific plug-ins for Anthropic's new Claude Cowork tool triggered a broad selloff across enterprise software stocks, as investors panicked that AI tools like Claude would render traditional enterprise software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies obsolete. What Anthropic unveiled Thursday might spell yet more trouble for those older software companies, further heightening market anxiety. The AI company debuted Claude Opus 4.6, an advanced AI model capable of conducting sophisticated professional tasks and spinning up and coordinating whole teams of AI agents.
